I have been reflecting on the beautiful hymn “In Christ Alone,” and I wanted to share some thoughts with you.  The opening words “In Christ alone my hope is found; He is my light, my strength, my song”— are a gentle reminder of where our true identity and purpose come from.    Life takes us through many different seasons, and in each one, it is essential to be anchored on God’s perspective of who we are.   As Christians, our essence is not shaped by what we have or what we achieve, but by our relationship with Christ.

Acts 17:28 (AMP) says, “In Him we live and move and exist [that is in Him we actually have our being]” a powerful declaration that our entire existence is rooted in Him.   Yet, in the rush and pressures of daily life, this truth can easily slip from our awareness.   When challenges arise, or the storms of life feel overwhelming, we may find ourselves seeking comfort in temporary things or relying on people, forgetting who God is and who we are in Him. 

This is why it is so important to pause and examine our identity.   How do you see yourself? And more importantly, how do you see yourself in Christ?  Jesus said in John 10:27–28, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.”   This shows that true belonging begins with recognising ourselves as His, and letting His truth guide our decisions, our choices, and the direction of our lives.   Our identity is not defined by the economy, the government, our careers, our family, or society’s expectations—Jesus alone should define us.  And it is out of that definition that we live, move, and make choices daily.

Paul expressed this longing so passionately in Philippians 3:10 (AMP): his desire “that I may know Him [ experientailly, becoming more throughly accquinted in Him, understanding the remarkable wonders of His person more completely]  and  [in that same way experience]  the power of His resurrection [which overflows and is active in believers] and [that I may share] the fellowship of His sufferings by being continually conformed [inwardly into His likeness even] to His death [dying as He did]”.   There is such beauty and safety in truly knowing God—allowing Him to walk with us, shape us, and build us brick by brick.  This is what growth in Christ looks like: responding to God’s gentle call to draw nearer, to come up higher, to discover our essence in Him alone.  He longs to be the desire of your heart.

And as we walk with God, our lives should naturally be marked by faith by the help of the Holy Spirit.  Hebrews 11:1 reminds us that faith is “the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”  Faith is rooted in what we hear, in the revelation we receive from God’s Word by the help of the Holy Spirit, and that revelation grows into strong conviction.  Hope then rises, a confident expectation of God’s goodness and promises.  So it is worth asking: What has God spoken to you? What truth from His Word are you holding onto and running with?  Because “faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.” Romans 10:17. 

As you step into this new week, my dear friend, I encourage you to take a moment to meditate on the hymn “In Christ Alone,” asking the Holy Spirit to give you a fresh revelation of the love of God. Let its words draw your heart back to your identity, your hope, and to the One who holds your life so lovingly and securely in His hands.
