We continue with our Reflect and Recall note, and this week our focus is on “Fear not.”  Before we go further, let us take a moment to understand what fear means.

Fear is a primary, powerful emotion caused by the anticipation or awareness of danger.  It is often a reaction to intimidation, which is an act of frightening, threatening, or coercing someone, usually to compel them to do what the aggressor wants. This can include physical threats, emotional manipulation, bullying, or harassment, and is considered an offence.

Fear is a reaction—an automatic, emotion-driven impulse to a situation—and not a response, which is a deliberate, conscious choice based on reason and long-term goals. A response requires assessment before action.

This understanding helps us grasp what God means when He says, “Fear not, for I am with you.”  God is saying: focus on Me, who is greater than anything, any situation, or any force that is intimidating you. I am stronger than it.  Let Me show you how to respond—rest in Me and dwell in Me. For he who dwells (stays) in the secret place, a life of continuous, habitual fellowship with God, shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty (Psalm 91:1).

The enemy often uses intimidation to distract us and shift our focus away from God.  However, our Christian walk is built on focusing on God—faith and following His Spirit. Fear wants us to believe that we are alone and without help, but this is a lie.  We have God, and He is Sovereign, the Almighty. We have His Word, and He does not lie (Numbers 23:19).

This truth is reflected in Scripture:

“But in the day that I’m afraid,
I lay all my fears before you and trust in You with all my heart.
What harm could a man bring to me?
With God on my side, I will not be afraid of what comes.
The roaring praises of God fill my heart as I trust His promises.”
Psalm 56:3–4 (TPT)

These verses remind us that there will be moments and situations that cause fear or intimidation.  Yet we are encouraged to lay all our fears, not some before God and trust Him to help us shift our gaze to Him and see things from His perspective.

So this week, make a conscious decision to tell fear no, and choose instead to focus on God and His promises.  We come to know His promises by staying in His Word. The Word anchors our faith and helps us know God better through the Holy Spirit, reminding us of who has our back.
